by Listen and Talk Staff

global-giving-photo-projects

GlobalGiving is the first and largest global crowdfunding community that connects nonprofits, donors, and companies in nearly every country around the world, making it possible for nonprofits all over the world (including Listen and Talk) to access the tools, training, and support they need to be more effective and make our world a better place. We are excited to announce 5 new GlobalGiving projects that you can help support!

Dear Friends,

From all of us at Listen and Talk, we send the warmest wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy new year.

There is much for which to be grateful and as 2016 comes to a close, we are humbled and honored to serve the children and families who seek our help. We will continue to strive toward our vision that no child be limited by hearing loss and seek ways to expand and enhance our programs. We have several exciting initiatives to share with you:

The Gift of Music

global-giving-photo-music

Music to Help Children Learn to Listen
This project will provide support to Listen and Talk's music program for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Music is a powerful tool in enriching a child's listening skills as they learn to listen and talk. Musical instruments, song books, and specialized materials available in our music program can help families make music an integral part of their everyday lives. #music #discovery #artsandculture

The Gift of Sound Access

global-giving-photo-hd-loaner-bank

Help them Hear! Hearing Device Loaner Bank
Listen and Talk will establish a hearing technology loaner bank serving 200 families/year. Children attending Listen and Talk use high-tech hearing devices to give them access to sound. Specialists help them develop the ability to listen when using their hearing devices. The loaner bank will allow for learning to listen even when a personal device is in repair. #soundaccess #hearingdevices #uninterruptedlearning

The Gift of Knowledge

global-giving-photo-building-capacity

Building Capacity in Underserved Regions
There is a shortage of qualified providers in many regions of Washington State. The goal of this project is to advance the skill development of birth-to-three providers serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families, in underserved areas of WA. #knowledge #mentorship #outreach

Please consider making a year-end contribution to Listen and Talk or specifically to one of these projects and please encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to do the same. All donations are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers to the full extent permitted by law.

With deep gratitude,

Suzanne Quigley, PhD, CCC-A

No Child is Limited by Hearing Loss

by Listen and Talk Staff

PHOENIX_BLOG

May is "Better Speech and Hearing Month" and we are celebrating Listen and Talk's vision that no child is limited by hearing loss. Through fundraising events with our friends at the University Lions Club and The Seattle Foundation, we are raising awareness of the powerful work happening in our community to support children who are deaf or hard of hearing and raising the funds necessary to continue delivering services to the families who need them.

University Lions Club

2015LIONS

The University Lions Club is one of the largest and oldest service clubs in the region. The Club was chartered in 1924 and continues to be a force in the Seattle Community. Members include business and professional men and women, retirees, clergy and educators. The motto of Lions Clubs International is “We Serve.” The University Lions Club strives to live up to that motto every day.

This year, the University Lions held their 44th Annual Auction, "Starry, Starry, Night for Hearing and Sight" on May 16th at the Washington Convention Center. Since 2005, Listen and Talk has been a proud beneficiary of the Fund-a-Need portion of the auction. Proceeds from the evening’s Fund-a-Need will make a direct and significant impact on the lives of the families and children we serve at Listen and Talk.

At this year’s event, we celebrated Phoenix Meabon, a pre-K student in our Blended Classroom program. The Meabon Family shared their story and spoke about their unique experience at Listen and Talk. You can read their whole story here!

In addition to supporting organizations like Listen and Talk through financial contributions and volunteer efforts, the University Lions service activities include:

  • Hearing loss awareness campaigns
  • Hearing screenings
  • Hearing aid recycling program
  • Recreational camps for children with hearing loss
  • Projects for the greater hearing loss community

Thank you, University Lions!

2013 | 2014 Gratitude Report

by Listen and Talk Staff

1314_LISTENTALK_GRATITUDE_REPORT

No child is limited by hearing loss. This vision of Listen and Talk drives all we do. We seek to enable children who are deaf or hard of hearing to have every opportunity for independent and successful lives.

Listen and Talk is the Pacific Northwest’s largest provider of early intervention and classroom services for children developing listening and spoken language, and we continue to grow rapidly. As awareness grows around what is possible for babies born deaf or hard of hearing, Listen and Talk is sought out, powering dramatic growth. Moreover, our amazing alumni are living our vision in an ever-expanding number of schools and professions, and in so doing they are telling our story in the most powerful way. And the new students keep coming. The reality is that our growth is limited by our fundraising ability, not our service delivery capabilities.

In recent years, we have further strengthened our organization’s ability to drive toward our vision. We have added to our amazing team of experts, expanded audiology, and invested in board development. We have innovated service delivery for children and families, including the development of our groundbreaking tele-health model. We have participated in a multi-center study with colleagues from around the country, expanded community awareness of the importance of early identification and intervention, made investments in the tracking and reporting of child and family outcomes, shared our expertise locally and nationally, and enhanced our facility.

As we embark on a new year, a year that is bound to bring more children to our door bursting with potential that we are pleased to help unlock, I am filled with gratitude, excitement, and anticipation. To our partners and donors, we are humbled by the commitment you demonstrate to our organization and share this report to highlight what Listen and Talk is, and has become, because of you.

Thank you.

Volunteers at Work: Microsoft and United Way Day of Caring 2014

by Listen and Talk Staff

Chris, a Listen and Talk parent alum, and his wonderful family and co-workers at Microsoft came together on Friday, September 19 for United Way's Day of Caring to spruce up our playground spaces. The biggest job for the team was to prepare our new play area with 13 cubic yards of wood chips! Wow! The kids got to watch the wood chips travel through a giant hose from the dump truck. It was cool to watch—but very, very noisy! But it was all worth it, because the team got the job done, and now we are ready for the next steps in improving our playground spaces for the kids to enjoy all year round. Hooray! Thank you to these awesome volunteers who generously donated their time and efforts to give back to Listen and Talk. We are grateful for your service!

THANK YOU to our GiveBIG 2014 Donors! 31 Super-Donors gave BIG and raised a combined total of $6,500 to help underwrite technology spending at Listen and Talk—three times the amount we raised for this campaign last year. WOW!

The Seattle Foundation's GiveBIG is a one-day, online charitable giving event inspiring people to give generously to nonprofit organizations across the region and our GiveBIG donors made a BIG difference with their participation.

The staff and students of Listen and Talk are dependent on fundraising to keep our computers, iPads, and audiology technology current. You can still contribute to this important fund by making a secure donation online at our website with a note in the comments section about "technology".

Listen and Talk and Derrick Coleman

by Listen and Talk Staff

The Seattle Seahawks player with hearing loss inspires on and off the field!

Super Bowl Champion Derrick Coleman, fullback for the Seattle Seahawks, has a partial hearing loss and has worn hearing aids since the age of 3. Derrick visited Listen and Talk last November to read a book to our classroom kiddos and share his personal message of perseverance to the kids, alumni families, and staff.

Derrick's story was featured on national airwaves in a special broadcast of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. The NBC crew interviewed Derrick at practice and then came to visit our kiddos at Listen and Talk!

Here's the video segment featuring current Listen and Talk students and alumni:

Derrick's story continued as he joined Twitter and a fan tweeted a letter from a girl with hearing loss. He replied by tweeting a letter back! The story was featured on CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley with a link back to our site!
