Kim Hamren and Maura Berndsen to Speak at WSLHA Convention

by Listen and Talk Staff

Our Senior Birth to Three Specialist, Kim Hamren and Educational Director Maura Berndsen will present Improving Equity in Services at the Washington Speech Language Hearing Association Convention on October 13. Learn more about this event at the WSLHA website.

About the presentation: There are stark disparities between families of color and white families accessing services and achieving great outcomes. We work to change this. Kim will describe our equity journey, reflect on organizational practices and demonstrate ways in which we are evolving our culture to improve access and outcomes for all families. Participants will develop action steps to improve equity in their organizations.

Kim Hamren, M.Ed, CED, LSLS Cert. AVT, is the Senior Birth to Three Specialist and Maura Berndsen, MA, CED, LSLS Cert. AVT is the Educational Director at Listen and Talk in Seattle and have worked at Listen and Talk since 1997. They mentor the Birth to Three and Classroom staff that provide services for families who have children with hearing loss.

No Child is Limited by Hearing Loss

by Listen and Talk Staff

PHOENIX_BLOG

May is "Better Speech and Hearing Month" and we are celebrating Listen and Talk's vision that no child is limited by hearing loss. Through fundraising events with our friends at the University Lions Club and The Seattle Foundation, we are raising awareness of the powerful work happening in our community to support children who are deaf or hard of hearing and raising the funds necessary to continue delivering services to the families who need them.

University Lions Club

2015LIONS

The University Lions Club is one of the largest and oldest service clubs in the region. The Club was chartered in 1924 and continues to be a force in the Seattle Community. Members include business and professional men and women, retirees, clergy and educators. The motto of Lions Clubs International is “We Serve.” The University Lions Club strives to live up to that motto every day.

This year, the University Lions held their 44th Annual Auction, "Starry, Starry, Night for Hearing and Sight" on May 16th at the Washington Convention Center. Since 2005, Listen and Talk has been a proud beneficiary of the Fund-a-Need portion of the auction. Proceeds from the evening’s Fund-a-Need will make a direct and significant impact on the lives of the families and children we serve at Listen and Talk.

At this year’s event, we celebrated Phoenix Meabon, a pre-K student in our Blended Classroom program. The Meabon Family shared their story and spoke about their unique experience at Listen and Talk. You can read their whole story here!

In addition to supporting organizations like Listen and Talk through financial contributions and volunteer efforts, the University Lions service activities include:

  • Hearing loss awareness campaigns
  • Hearing screenings
  • Hearing aid recycling program
  • Recreational camps for children with hearing loss
  • Projects for the greater hearing loss community

Thank you, University Lions!

Sound Possibilities

by Listen and Talk Staff

"Every mountaintop is within reach if you just keep climbing!"

Sound Possibilities, our 9th Annual Benefit and Auction, took place at the Mountaineers Program Center on Saturday, February 21, 2015. The evening included exciting silent and live auctions, a rousing game of Heads or Tails, a sinfully sweet Dessert Dash,  a heartfelt parent testimonial from Jodi and Mark Kawabata, and a powerful video featuring the children of Listen and Talk's early days—who are now all grown up!

2013 | 2014 Gratitude Report

by Listen and Talk Staff

1314_LISTENTALK_GRATITUDE_REPORT

No child is limited by hearing loss. This vision of Listen and Talk drives all we do. We seek to enable children who are deaf or hard of hearing to have every opportunity for independent and successful lives.

Listen and Talk is the Pacific Northwest’s largest provider of early intervention and classroom services for children developing listening and spoken language, and we continue to grow rapidly. As awareness grows around what is possible for babies born deaf or hard of hearing, Listen and Talk is sought out, powering dramatic growth. Moreover, our amazing alumni are living our vision in an ever-expanding number of schools and professions, and in so doing they are telling our story in the most powerful way. And the new students keep coming. The reality is that our growth is limited by our fundraising ability, not our service delivery capabilities.

In recent years, we have further strengthened our organization’s ability to drive toward our vision. We have added to our amazing team of experts, expanded audiology, and invested in board development. We have innovated service delivery for children and families, including the development of our groundbreaking tele-health model. We have participated in a multi-center study with colleagues from around the country, expanded community awareness of the importance of early identification and intervention, made investments in the tracking and reporting of child and family outcomes, shared our expertise locally and nationally, and enhanced our facility.

As we embark on a new year, a year that is bound to bring more children to our door bursting with potential that we are pleased to help unlock, I am filled with gratitude, excitement, and anticipation. To our partners and donors, we are humbled by the commitment you demonstrate to our organization and share this report to highlight what Listen and Talk is, and has become, because of you.

Thank you.
